Second COVID-19 death, ninth confirmed case reported in Mingo County

The Mingo County Health Department is reporting the county’s second COVID-19-related death, as well as the county’s ninth lab-confirmed case of the disease.

In a statement issued Friday, the health department reported that a 73-year-old retired male had died as a result of COVID-19 on Friday. The patient died at the University of Kentucky’s medical center in Lexington, the statement said, and the deceased individual, whose name has not been officially released, was Mingo County’s fifth person to test positive for COVID-19.

“Our condolences go out to the family,” the health department said in the statement.

The death reported Friday is the county’s second COVID-19-related death. The first was that of a male patient who died at Cabell-Huntington Hospital on April 15. The health department said that patient had underlying health conditions and was “critically ill” at the time of his death.

The health department did not release information regarding pre-existing conditions or other health-related factors regarding the patient who died Friday.

Also on Friday, the Mingo County Health Department reported the county’s ninth lab-confirmed case of COVID-19. According to a separate statement, the health department reported that a 44-year-old male who exhibited mild symptoms of the virus had tested positive and was isolating at home with his family.

The health department is currently working to notify all those with whom the patient had close contact. The latest case is the ninth lab-confirmed out of 1,100 tests administered in the county. Mingo County also has three “probable” cases of COVID-19.

The health department reports that six patients have recovered from COVID-19 in the county, leaving the county with four current active cases.
