VANSANT, Va. — A pregnant Buchanan County woman who had been reported missing is dead, and her boyfriend is in jail, charged with her murder.

Deputies with the Buchanan County Sheriff’s Office had been looking for Amber Dawn Compton, 35, of Vansant, after she had been reported missing Saturday. Just before 10 p.m., they found her body inside her home with multiple gunshot wounds.

Compton was seven months pregnant at the time of her death.

Following an investigation, deputies obtained an arrest warrant for Dustin Barret Owens, 38, of Vansant, who had been dating the victim. Police surrounded his home and took him into custody early Sunday morning.

Owens is now charged with first-degree murder. He is being held without bond in the Southwest Virginia Regional Jail at Haysi.

The sheriff’s office confirmed that both Compton and Owens were employees of Keen Mountain Correctional Center, in Oakwood, Va.
