CLINTWOOD, Va. — The Dickenson County Board of Supervisors voted Sept. 22 to support a local animal adoption program and approved a resolution naming a bridge for a county native killed while serving in Vietnam.

The adoption proposal came from Sabrina Stanley’s LEADSWVA capstone project. Under the proposal, Dickenson County Animal Control would manage a formal adoption program intended to place more animals in homes and ease shelter crowding.

The board also approved a resolution naming the Route 621 bridge at Lower George’s Fork the Johnny Lee Hawkins Memorial Bridge. Hawkins was a Dickenson County native and Vietnam veteran who died in service.

In other business, representatives of SE Group presented “Gateways to Adventure,” an outdoor recreation planning initiative for Dickenson and Buchanan counties. The project aims to develop recreation improvements that could qualify for funding. A public survey is planned to gather residents’ ideas.

Lunchbox276 reported delivering more than 7,200 weekend food bags to Dickenson County students during the 2025-26 school year. The organization said continued support from the Columbus FPS Foundation could help it reach more children.

Supervisors also renewed contracts supporting transportation to area colleges, backed a buildout of DCER incubator space and approved church lease renewals involving parking. The board received an update on the Lonesome Pine Regional Industrial Facilities Authority and approved an operational agreement involving ROPES OAA and local recovery services.
