BRENTWOOD, Tenn. — Country music legend Dolly Parton has died.
The news was announced by her nephew and head of security, Bryan Seaver, through a video over social media.
“Dolly also opened doors for generations of singers, songwriters, musicians and dreamers from every walk of life and across every continent,” Seaver said. “By her example, we believed that anything is possible. She never saw a door she couldn’t open, and the doors she opened made and changed history.”
No cause of death was announced. Dolly Parton was 80 years old.
Kentucky Gov. Andy Beshear has directed that flags at all state office buildings be lowered to half-staff for a period of one week beginning at 6 p.m. this evening in honor and remembrance of Parton. Flags should remain at half-staff until sunset on Tuesday, Sept. 1.
“Dolly Parton was an American icon who brought people together and spread joy,” Gov. Beshear said in a statement on social media. “In Kentucky, she shared her love of reading through her Imagination Library, sparking brighter futures for thousands of children across our commonwealth. There aren’t enough words to sum up the impact and legacy Dolly leaves behind, but it is clear that it will continue for generations to come. Britainy and I are praying for Dolly’s family and all those hurting from this enormous loss.”
