Fans Ejected, Police Called After Alleged Heated Altercation At Pikeville–Prestonsburg Soccer Match

Tensions ran high at last night’s soccer match between Pikeville and Prestonsburg, resulting in all fans being ejected and police called to the scene after alleged altercations with a referee.

Witnesses reported that a confrontation began between the official and a group of Prestonsburg fans, with voices raised on the sideline. According to those in attendance, a Prestonsburg player then appeared to approach the referee before being restrained by several adults. Reports to Mountain Top Sports allege that the official had used inappropriate demeaning language, which further escalated things, leading to the ejection.

Spectators said all fans were asked to leave, and Pikeville Police Department officers soon arrived to assist.

Pikeville Independent Schools Superintendent David Trimble spoke with Mountain Top Sports following the game and praised the quick response from school officials and law enforcement.

“The safety of everyone at our events is of the utmost importance to us as a district,” Trimble said. “We had our district’s school resource officer, high school principal and athletic director present at the event, as we do at each of our competitions. Immediately upon the issue occurring they responded and helped to deescalate the situation quickly before any physical issues occurred.”

Trimble also thanked the four Pikeville Police officers who responded to ensure order was maintained, as well as the cooperation of both schools’ students and fans. He noted that all spectators were asked to step outside before the game resumed.

While he declined to discuss specifics, citing an ongoing investigation, Trimble said the district has been in contact with the KHSAA regarding the incident and that he appreciates their commitment to always support athletics in their schools and show willingness to assist in all situations.

“It is always our goal that student athletes from all teams and programs are able to compete in a safe environment, and we appreciate all those who work hard to assure that happens,” he said.
