Floyd man charged with stealing phone cable

PRESTONSBURG, Ky. — A Floyd County man is facing a felony theft charge, after police found five rolls of telephone wire in the back of his truck.

Kentucky State Police received a report from AT&T that someone had stolen the wire from Route 1428 in Allen. What the thief didn’t realize, however, is that AT&T had placed a GPS tracker with the wire, allowing them to tell police it was located at liquor store in Prestonsburg.

When police arrived, they spotted the wire in plain view in the back of a pickup truck. The trooper then questioned the owner, Tyler McKinney, 22, of Auxier, about it. McKinney said he spotted the wire beside a guardrail, so he stopped and took it.

According to AT&T, the wire was valued at more than $25,000.

He was arrested and charged with felony theft, which is punishable by up to five years in prison.
