PIKEVILLE, Ky. — Strong winds and heavy rains early Friday morning took a toll on power lines, as area utility companies reported widespread outages.
Kentucky Power was hardest hit, reporting more than 16,000 customers without power at the height of the outage. As of 10 a.m., that number was down to a little more than 10,000.
Pike County had the most customers without power. As of 10 a.m., more than 3,400 were still waiting for restoration. Nearly half of those were in the area around Belfry.
Letcher County was not far behind, with nearly 2,900 customers without power. Other counties with outages include Floyd with 238, Johnson with 10, Knott with 1,299, Lawrence with 416, Magoffin with fewer than five, and Martin with 141.
Big Sandy RECC reported fewer outages, but was still dealing with repairs. More than 1,300 customers were without power at the height of the storm, but by 10 a.m., that number was down to 249. Counties still with outages at that hour included Floyd, with 144; Johnson, with 99; and Morgan, with six.
