PIKEVILLE, Ky. — A secular rights organization says it has received assurances from Pikeville Independent Schools that future graduation ceremonies will not feature prayer.
The Freedom From Religion Foundation sent a letter to Pikeville Superintendent David Trimble on Aug. 5. In it, the group complained that Pikeville High School’s 2020 graduation included three Christian prayers led by students. The group noted that the Supreme Court has continually struck down prayer at school sponsored events.
In a statement issued today, the group said it had received an email from the school district’s attorney, saying he has advised the school to refrain from religious prayer at future graduations.
