High speed chase ends in crash

Following striking the tree, she exited the vehicle and fled about 100 yards on foot until I was able to apprehend her.”

PRESTONSBURG, KY.-People suspected of crimes often make matters much worse for themselves by attempting to run from law enforcement. That was the case late Tuesday night when a Floyd County woman crashed her vehicle trying to run from police.

Sergeant Ross Shurtleff with the Prestonsburg Police Department attempted to make a traffic stop after a vehicle ran a red light near Wal-Mart on route 114. Shurtleff says that once he tried to pull the vehicle over it sped away, turning onto US 23 and reaching speeds of up to 100 miles an hour. The pursuit didn’t last much longer.

“As we continue northbound into the curve right here at the top of the hill at Tiger Mart in Prestonsburg she cut the wheels to the right losing control of her vehicle and striking the guard rail on the northbound shoulder. Following that, she crossed all northbound lanes of travel, all the southbound lanes of travel and onto the southbound shoulder where she struck a tree. Following striking the tree, she exited the vehicle and fled about 100 yards on foot until I was able to apprehend her after she jumped over a hill side near the mouth of Big Branch of Abbot.”

37-year old Leann Shortridge was arrested and charged with DUI, 2-counts of fleeing and evading police and other traffic violations.
