House Bill 525 Passes Out Of Committee

Frankfort, KY — Educators across Kentucky are once again up in arms over a bill moving through the Kentucky General Assembly. HB 525 was filed by Republican Representative Ken Upchurch of the 52nd district. The bill seeks to change the structure of the Teachers’ Retirement System. Wednesday evening, emails and social media posts began circulating calling for Kentucky teachers to call in sick to work in advance of a committee vote today on the bill. At least 6 schools districts across the state cancelled classes due to teacher absences, but none of those were in eastern Kentucky. Thursday afternoon, House Bill 525 was passed out of the House State Government Committee without consent by a vote of 11 to 5. It now goes to the full House for its consideration.
