PIKEVILLE, Ky. — A Pike County couple has been arrested on felony charges, after they allegedly fled from a crash on U.S. 23.

The incident happened just after 3 p.m., Wednesday, near the entrance to Ratliff’s Creek Road. Witnesses said a truck was pulling a trailer when one of the trailer’s tires flew off and crashed into the windshield of an SUV, causing serious injury to the driver.

The truck continued without stopping, but witnesses reported seeing it turn onto U.S. 119. A Pikeville Police officer found the truck pulled into a brushy area and the driver ran away from the truck when he saw the officer approaching. He was found lying in a ditch in the woods behind a building and placed under arrest after a brief struggle.

The man, identified as Jarrad Wayne Hicks, 41, told police he didn’t stop after the accident because he had a suspended license and active warrants for his arrest.

His wife, Cara Nichole Hicks, 44, had been following behind his truck and was also at the scene. Police say she refused to help police apprehend her husband.

Police say the trailer was concealed in some weeds and was still partially attached to the truck.

Both were arrested on felony charges of leaving the scene of an accident with serious injuries and tampering with physical evidence, as well as other charges. They are being held in the Pike County Detention Center.
