The Magoffin County Hornets picked up their first win of the season Wednesday night, rolling past Prestonsburg 80-60.
Magoffin County had three players reach double figures, led by a dominant performance from Russell Walker. Walker posted a monster double-double, finishing with 20 points and 20 rebounds to control the paint on both ends of the floor.
Walker shot 42.9 percent from the field and went 8-for-12 at the free-throw line, while missing his lone attempt from beyond the arc. Evan Reed and Maycen Allen also provided solid scoring support, each finishing with 11 points.
Reed had an efficient night shooting the basketball, connecting on 80 percent of his shots from the field and 66.7 percent from three-point range, while going 1-for-2 at the free-throw line. Allen shot 37.5 percent from the floor, missed his only three-point attempt, and finished the night shooting 71.4 percent from the line.
As a team, the Hornets shot 49.1 percent from the field, knocked down 44.4 percent of their shots from long range, and finished at 71 percent from the free-throw line. Magoffin County also won the rebounding battle, pulling down 41 boards.
The win improves Magoffin County to 1-6 on the season, while Prestonsburg drops to 0-6. Individual statistics for Prestonsburg were not available on KHSAA at press time.
Magoffin County will be back in action Friday when the Hornets take on Adair County at 7:30 p.m. as part of the Berea Holiday Classic at Madison Southern. Prestonsburg will return to the court Saturday, Dec. 20, traveling to Raceland to face Holmes at 6 p.m. in the 2025 Derby Classic.
