PIKE COUNTY, KY.-People suspected of crimes will often say just about anything to try to get out of trouble.
Police say that was the case for a Pike County man last week when he was suspected of DUI. Kentucky State Police was investigating the complaints of two men threatening one another. Troopers located one of the men, 55-year old John Charles of Pikeville, driving a vehicle with the wrong license plate and suspected him to be under the influence. According to the citation, while officers ran the vehicle information Charles called Post 9 and allegedly told them that he had information related to the death of Officer Scotty Hamilton, and that he would not give that information to any officers or help in any way if he was to be cited or arrested for any charges. When Charles was confronted about the call he allegedly made the comment that he wished he had a gun on him. Trooper William Petry says this is not the first time that they have had a problem like this from Charles.
“Apparently in the past he has had a reputation for giving information like this that is inaccurate. I assume he was trying to keep himself out of trouble with the DUI. The Trooper conducted an investigation and discovered that it was erroneous, there was nothing to the information that he had called in.”
Charles was arrested and charged DUI, terroristic threatening, menacing and other traffic related violations. He remains lodged in the Pike County Detention Center.
