Troopers were called Saturday to Chestnut Branch in Freeburn, where they found Nancy Gearles was found lying on a bench outside a burning house with multiple cuts, bruises and burns. Police say her eyes were swollen shut and she was bleeding from her ears and nose.

Gearles was initially unable to speak with officers, who were only able to identify her based on the mailbox outside the house and a tattoo on her chest.

While police were still on the scene, a neighbor approached and said he had security cameras pointed in the direction of the house. Police reviewed the video and were able to see a woman leaving the house shortly after midnight.

That woman was identified as Angel Hunt, 28, of Wharncliffe, W.Va., who police had encountered during an earlier complaint. Hunt was still wearing the same clothes as in the first encounter.

Three days after the incident, Gearles became alert while in the hospital and was able to give a statement to police. She identified Hunt as her attacker, then went on to describe what happened.

Gearles said Hunt tied her hands behind her back with an extension cord, then choked her with her hands and put her toes inside an Amish heater. She said Hunt also punched her, stomped on her and broke glass across her back. She said Hunt then set a fire in the living room and left.

In describing what Hunt was wearing during the incident, the arrest warrants says she described the same clothing seen in the video and in the earlier encounter with police.

Hunt has been arrested and is charged with attempted murder, first-degree assault, first-degree strangulation and first-degree arson.

The case is being handled by Trooper Terry Mounts with assistance from KSP Post 9.
