
WHITESBURG, Ky. — A Letcher County man is in jail after court records allege he crashed his motorcycle while running from police.
A Whitesburg police officer spotted Hayden Andrew Sandlin, 23, of Whitesburg, run a red light on his Harley Davidson. The officer relayed the information to a Letcher County sheriff’s deputy, who got behind the bike to pull it over. The police report says Sandlin sped away instead, prompting a chase along U.S. 119.
The police report notes Sandlin was weaving in and out of traffic and traveling at speeds close to 90 mph. As the motorcycle approached the U.S. 23 interchange, it his a patch of grass clippings in the road and crashed, causing road rash and minor injuries to Sandlin and his passenger.
Police say Sandlin then tried to run away, but he was tackled and arrested. The police report notes that as officers tried to put handcuffs on him, Sandlin backhanded a deputy with his injured hand, getting blood on the deputy’s face and in his mouth.
He was arrested for wanton endangerment, fleeing police, assaulting an officer, resisting arrest and other charges.
