WISE, Va. — A Wise County man has been sentenced to 20 years in prison, for charges related to the abuse and death of his infant son in 2015.

Franklin Len Mullins, 49, of Pound, was found guilty of involuntary manslaughter, child abuse and neglect, and unlawful wounding.

Mullins was the father of twin infant sons. The first died in June of 2015 at 11 weeks old due to an E. coli infection. He was sentenced to 30 months in prison for child abuse and neglect following that death.

The other child died in August of that year, after he was taken to a hospital for possible seizures. Authorities found the child died of blunt-force head trauma and brain injuries.

“This is a tragic and heartbreaking case,” Commonwealth’s Attorney Chuck Slemp said. “An innocent child’s life was taken before he could reach his full potential.  I am thankful for the efforts of Sheriff Grant Kilgore and the hard work of his investigating team, the medical examiner, and the social workers involved, and thankful that after almost six years Mr. Mullins will finally be held accountable for the abuse of his infant twins.”

Mullins is being held in the Southwest Virginia Regional Jail at Duffield, awaiting transfer to the Virginia prison system.
