Pike County Schools: All online or in-class full time in fall

The Pike County Schools District will offer either online or full-time, in-class learning options for students in the upcoming fall 2020 semester.

In a video posted Wednesday, Pike Schools Superintendent Reed Adkins said the district’s re-entry committee has voted to give students the option to either take part in all-online learning for the upcoming school year, or to take part in full-time, five-days-per-week classes in classrooms.

“We feel that we have created a program for our children that is both safe and will be beneficial for them in relation to their educational program,” Adkins said.

Adkins said the online learning option will take place through the Canvas learning management program in which students will watch an instructional video from a teacher and then complete an assignment based upon that video. The full-time, in-class option will see students in class five days per week, but adhering to guidelines from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, including social distancing and wearing masks while moving or when social distancing is not possible.

Adkins also announced the school district’s opening date for the fall semester will be Aug. 26 for students, with the school year concluding in mid-May 2021.
