A man and two women reported to Kentucky State Police that Marty Hurley, 49, of Stopover, held them at gunpoint with an AR-15-style rifle on May 30, then forced them into a mobile home and began setting fires inside. As the fires grew, the victims told police Hurley told them he would kill them if they tried to escape, then left the home and barricaded the door.

The victims said they were able to escape the burning structure after Hurley left.

All three victims suffered smoke inhalation and minor burns. One of the women had to be intubated and placed in intensive care due to severe smoke inhalation.

Police say all three gave consistent information and evidence was located at the scene corroborating their stories.

Police were unable to locate Hurley, but did reach him on the phone. He refused to turn himself in or tell them his location.

He further said he was in Charleston when the incident happened and provided the name of another person who could verify his alibi. That person contradicted Hurley’s story, saying he saw him at his residence when he claimed to be in Charleston.

Hurley was recently arrested in West Virginia and extradited to Kentucky on Thursday. He is now charged with three counts of attempted murder, two counts of kidnapping, and single counts of first-degree arson and kidnapping with serious injury.

The arson and kidnapping with serious injury charges are Class A felonies, punishable by 20-to-50 years or life in prison.
