PIKEVILLE, Ky. — A Pike County man probably thought it was his lucky day when he found a lost wallet containing several hundred dollars. It turned out to be not so lucky, when he was later taken to jail for theft.

Pikeville Police were at Walmart Tuesday investigating after a woman reported losing a wallet containing $644.

Reviewing security video, they saw the woman place the wallet on the roof of her car, forget about it, and drive away. They next looked at footage from Food City, where the woman went next. That video showed the wallet still on top of the car, but that’s when she discovered it missing and drove back to Walmart.

The wallet fell in the road on the return trip. Video from Gatti’s showed a PT Cruiser drive by the wallet, then stop as the driver picked it up and drove away.

They tracked down the driver, identified as Bobby Gene Charles, 51, of Raccoon. Charles reportedly admitted that he found the wallet, took the money, and placed the wallet in a blessing box at Zebulon.

Charles was arrested and charged with theft of mislaid property, which is a misdemeanor.
