Pike’s COVID-19 case count on the rise

The new case count for COVID-19 in Pike County remains on the rise.

According to the Pike County Health Department, Pike County has seen 30 new cases of COVID-19 over the past week, including 11 new cases over the weekend. Pike County Health Department Director Tammy Riley said Sunday that the increase over the past week is the largest over a week’s period for Pike County since the onset of the pandemic in March.

The increase in Pike County was announced on the day Kentucky’s largest daily increase in cases was announced. On Sunday, Gov. Andy Beshear announced 979 new COVID-19 cases in the state.

“This is concerning,” Riley said, adding that seven of the 11 new cases were those of patients under the age of 30.

Riley says there is a strong link among the new cases to travel to areas including the Carolinas, Tennessee and Florida. She also says the cases can be linked to social gatherings and parties, as well as links to employment.

According to the health department, Pike County has now reached 160 COVID-19 cases, including 150 lab-confirmed cases and 10 probable cases. Of those 160 cases, 112 patients have recovered and three have died as a result of COVID-19. There are currently 45 active COVID-19 cases in Pike County, according to the health department.

Riley says it is important to social distance with those outside of the household, wear face coverings, clean high-tough areas and practice good hygiene, particularly washing hands.
