Pikeville man picks up numerous charges following noise complaint

PIKEVILLE, Ky. – A report of a noise complaint Friday night turned out to be anything but routine for Pikeville city police.

Officers took Billy R. Yates, 26, of Pikeville, into custody shortly before midnight and charged him with operating a motor vehicle under the influence, first-degree criminal mischief, disorderly conduct, operating a motor vehicle on a suspended or revoked license, inadequate muffler, reckless driving, and improper equipment.

The long list of charges came after police were called to Kentucky Avenue following a noise complaint. Police said even prior to getting in their patrol car on Garred Street they could hear what might have been a motorcycle or loud car being repeatedly reeved up.

Officers spotted a maroon car traveling on Hambley Boulevard toward Downtown Liquor that then turned onto Garred Avenue and reversed back out onto Hambley and began driving backward into oncoming traffic toward Downtown Liquors.

Once police had caught up with Yates, they say he got out of the vehicle and was opening the hood of his car. Arresting officers said they then saw that he had slurred speech and was unsteady on his feet.

After arrested, police began searching Yates who then became belligerent and started headbutting the patrol car. While doing this, police said he eventually shattered the rear passenger side window.

Yates refused medical treatment at the scene and was later taken to Pike County Detention Center.
