Police are investigating a fatal officer-involved shooting that occurred at the scene of a fatality car crash which occurred earlier Tuesday morning in Pike County.
Kentucky State Police have confirmed to Mountain Top Media that troopers shot a person at the scene of a fatal two-vehicle crash on Ky. Highway 805 at Shelby Gap in Pike County. The shooting occurred just meters away from the scene of the wreck. The person shot by police died at the scene.
Kentucky State Police Post 9 spokesperson Trooper William Petry confirmed that the shooting was not related to the crash. Petry said the shooting resulted from a high-speed pursuit which originated near Elkhorn City, and led police along Elkhorn Creek Road toward Ky. 805 at Shelby Gap. Petry said the pursuit then traveled toward the crash scene.
“Apparently, the driver of the vehicle attempted to ram or run over a trooper … shots were fired,” Petry said.
No other injuries were reported as a result of the pursuit or the shooting.
Both the investigation into the shooting and the investigation into the fatal crash are ongoing. The identities of those involved have not yet been released.
