FRANKFORT, Ky. — The Kentucky Supreme Court is paying tribute to retired Justice and Floyd County native Janet Stumbo this afternoon, by dedicating her official portrait at the state Capitol.
Stumbo retired in 2017, after serving 26 years on the bench. She was first elected to the Kentucky Court of Appeals in 1989, becoming only the second woman elected to the position. In 1993, she became the first woman elected to the Kentucky Supreme Court without having been appointed to the body first. She returned to the Court of Appeals in 2007, where she remained until her retirement.
Stumbo has been awarded for her work promoting gender fairness and using evidence of abuse as grounds for setting aside divorce settlements, as well as her support in creating a shelter for abused woman in Floyd County.
Following the dedication, Stumbo’s portrait will hang on the second floor of the Capitol.
