FRANKFORT, Ky. — The Kentucky Public Service Commission has scheduled a hearing to consider Mountain Water District’s request for a $3 million increase of water and sewer rates.
Mountain Water District is seeking to increase water revenues by $2 million and sewer revenues by $1 million. The average residential water bill would rise from $33.50 now to more than $41 under the proposal.
In addition, Mountain Water District is also asking to add surcharge of $5.61 a month for 36 months to pay for repairs to reduce its rate of water loss from its current 27.58 percent.
The district is proposing to phase in the sewer rate increase over two years, which will result in the average residential sewer bill rising from nearly $72 now to more than $105 in two years.
The hearing will begin at 9 a.m., on Wednesday, Aug. 16, at the PSC’s office in Frankfort. During the hearing, the district will make its case for why the rate increases are necessary, while witnesses can testify for or against the proposal.
The PSC will rule on the rate request sometime after the hearing.
