Routine traffic stop ends in felony charges

“He likely would’ve spent overnight in jail.”         -Officer Zachary Mitchell-

PAINTSVILLE, KY.- Suspected criminals often make matters word for themselves when they attempt to run from police. A Lawrence County man is now facing a felony charge for doing just that.

Officer Zachary Mitchell with the Paintsville Police Department attempted to stop a vehicle after clocking it traveling at over twice the speed limit on 6th street. Mitchell says when he turned on his lights the vehicle accelerated and blew out a tire causing him to spin out of control and come to a stop. The driver of the vehicle 35-year old Samuel Borders of Ulysses was arrested and charged with fleeing and evading police, wanton endangerment of a police officer and several traffic and drug related charges after pills and a syringe were found in the vehicle. Officer Mitchell says Borders would have only been facing misdemeanor charges if he had stopped initially.

“Had he just yielded to the emergency lights and pulled over when ordered to do so, he probably would’ve just faced misdemeanor traffic violations as well as the speed of course due to it being a highly congested areas. He likely would’ve spent overnight in jail. Now due to the conduct where he failed to yield and sped off through a residential area, he now faces charge of wanton endangerment of a police officer, wanton endangerment of civilian and it upgrades the charge due to the congestion of the area to a fleeing first, which is also a felony.”

Officer Mitchell when on to say that while being searched at the Big Sandy Detention Center Borders was found to have concealed a small amount of cash inside his body.
