Southern to train workers for solar farm

LOGAN, W.Va. — Officials in West Virginia this week announced the construction of what will be the largest solar farm in the eastern U.S., and Southern West Virginia Community & Technical College will be training the workers who will make it possible.

“Today’s announcement is exciting for the people and the economy of the region,” explained Southern President Dr. Pamela L. Alderman. “We are looking forward to partnering with SEVA WV by providing workforce training and other educational support for this endeavor. It is a great day for SEVA WV, Southern, and West Virginia.”

SunPark is a planned 58,000-acre site located on the border of Boone and Lincoln counties. The multiphase project will include commercial, industrial, tourism and hospitality developments, but the centerpiece will be a 3,000-acre, 250-megawatt solar farm on the site of the old Hobet Mine.

The solar park is expected to cost $320 million to develop and will create up to 300 jobs paying an average of $30 an hour during the construction phase.

Southern has been selected to provide workforce training and other educational support for SunPark.
