SW Va. man pleads guilty to filing false tax returns

ABINGDON, Va. — While many people are busy preparing and filing their taxes this time of year, a southwestern Virginia man has admitted to filing false tax returns in previous years.

Matthew Wood Ridgaway signed a plea agreement admitting that he did not report all of his income in 2014, 2015 and 2016. Over that three-year period, Ridgaway admitted to not reporting rental income of more than $136,000, resulting in a nearly $32,000 underpayment of taxes.

In addition to having to pay the taxes, he now faces a potential maximum sentence of three years in prison and $250,000 in fines, when he is sentenced at a later date.
