MARTIN, Ky. — Two people were arrested after a suspected DUI turned into arrests for fentanyl trafficking instead.
State troopers had pulled over a car on Route 80 near Martin, when officers spotted a bag of meth lying out in the open. They requested assistance from a K9 unit from the Floyd County Sheriff’s Office, which resulted in the discovery of a small amount of fentanyl.
The driver, identified as Denna Medrano, 39, of Mousie, later let police know she had more fentanyl hidden in a body cavity. In all, police recovered more than an ounce of fentanyl.
They also found a ledger listing drug sales, as well as other people distributing drugs for Medrano.
Medrano and her passenger, Neal Thompson, 53, of Topmost, were arrested and charged with aggravated fentanyl trafficking and possession of drug paraphernalia. The trafficking charge carries a potential prison sentence of 10-to-20 years.
