Victim’s family upset after hearing delayed without warning

PRESTONSBURG, Ky. — Family members of Larry Hinkle crowded a Floyd County courtroom Friday morning, for the first court appearance of a man accused leaving the scene of the accident that killed him.

Family members of Larry Hinkle say they will continue to work for justice, after he was struck and killed by a car last year.

The only problem was, no one told them the hearing had been postponed.

Kyle Collins, 23, of Berea, is accused of failing to stop after hitting Hinkle with his car nearly a year ago. The 60-year-old Hinkle was walking alongside Route 979 at Teaberry on July 1, when the incident happened. He was pronounced dead at the scene.

During Friday morning’s hearing, Floyd Circuit Judge Johnny Ray Harris also appeared surprised by the delay, and he apologized to Hinkle’s family for no one telling them of the change.

Family members, however, were upset but say they will continue to fight for justice.

Collins faces 1-to-5 years in prison if he is convicted of leaving the scene of the accident. He is now set to be in court July 5.
