Pair accused of strong-arm robbery of special needs adult

Two people are facing felony robbery charges after being arrested in a strong-arm robbery case in Letcher County.

34-year-old Ashley Halcomb, of Linefork, and 35-year-old William “Willy” Dixon, of Whitesburg, were lodged in the Letcher County Jail Friday.

According to court documents, Halcomb and Dixon threatened a special needs adult, in the care of Linefork-resident Mary Bennett, with violence and strong-armed the young woman into stealing checks from Bennett and forging her signature. Court documents said the pair then used the checks and cash stolen from Bennett at several businesses in Letcher County.

Letcher County Sheriff’s Deputy Barry Engle said the amount of the stolen checks, cash and property unlawfully taken from Bennett could total as much as $5,000.

Engle said the pair was located at Dixon’s mother’s residence in Powell County and arrested there. They were returned to Letcher County and lodged in the Letcher County Jail.

Ashley Halcomb and William Dixon face charges of second-degree robbery, elder exploitation, theft and forgery charges.

Engle said Bennett has a history of adopting and caring for at-risk children. He said he’s happy that Halcomb and Dixon were captured.
