ABINGDON, Va. — Two Wise County men have been sentenced for selling fentanyl pills that resulted in two overdoses.

Paul Mason Perkins, 21, of Big Stone Gap, and Austin Jeremiah Lane, 23, of Norton, each pleaded guilty to federal charges of conspiracy to distribute and possession with the intent to distribute 40 grams or more of fentanyl. A third person charged in the case, 20-year-old Cheyenne Cassie Carico, also pleaded guilty and will be sentenced next month.

Perkins previously admitted purchasing thousands of pills from a source in California. He reportedly would buy 1,000 pills every few weeks and then sell them and get others, including Lane and Carico, to also sell them.

Perkins was sentenced to 42 months in prison, while Lane was sentenced to 36 months.

The case also resulted in three California residents pleading guilty to conspiring to distribute more than 400 grams of fentanyl. They have not yet been sentenced.
