ULYSSES, Ky. — A Lawrence County man faces a dozen charges, following a standoff during which police say he opened fire on them.

Troopers from Kentucky State Police Post 14 in Ashland went to the home of 61-year-old William Hickman, of Ulysses, around 8:30 Sunday night for a welfare check. When they arrived, they say Hickman began shooting through the house at them, but did not hit any of the officers.
That resulted in a standoff with police, which saw officers from Post 9 in Pikeville, Fish and Wildlife, the Lawrence County Sheriff’s Office, and Louisa Police Department respond to assist.
During the standoff, police used a loudspeaker to try to get Hickman to surrender, but he continued to fire guns at them. Then, just before 4 a.m., a Kentucky State Police special response team was able to take Hickman into custody.
Hickman now faces 12 counts of wanton endangerment of a police officer, a felony punishable by 1-to-5 years in prison. He is being held in the Big Sandy Regional Detention Center, in Paintsville.
