Pikeville Police were called to Bowles Addition, where a homeowner had detained a man who he said was trying to steal his kid’s bicycle.

When officers got there, they immediately detained Gregory Layne, 43, of Freeburn, who refused to talk at first.

Police then talked to the man who had detained Layne, who said his wife interrupted him trying to steal their child’s bicycle from their garage. When the man got home, he spotted Layne on another bicycle, so he tackled him and held him until officers arrived. It was later discovered the second bicycle had been stolen from another residence.

Layne was arrested on charges of burglary and attempted burglary. Court records say that, on the way to jail, he told police he had taken the bicycle so he wouldn’t have to walk all the way back to Freeburn after being released from jail earlier in the day.

Jail records indicate Layne was released from jail five hours earlier. He had been held on a charge of fleeing police who had been trying to serve him with a warrant in connection with a theft investigation.

Layne is currently back in jail on a $2,000 cash bond.
