SALYERSVILLE, Ky. — A Floyd County couple pulled over in Magoffin County early Monday morning found themselves headed to jail on trafficking charges, after police found drugs in their vehicle.

A sheriff’s deputy spotted a truck with loud exhaust, a tail light out and no license plate illumination passing by him in the Restaurant Row section of Route 114 in Salyersville and pulled it over.

The occupants of the truck — identified as Jeremiah Mahan, 31, and Melinda Hurd, 30, both of Prestonsburg — aroused the deputy’s suspicions, because they seemed nervous and gave conflicting answers to his questions. After the deputy spotted what appeared to be a used drug bag in the back seat, he searched the vehicle, finding meth, naloxone, scales and paraphernalia.

Both were arrested and charged with trafficking in meth and legend drugs and possession of drug paraphernalia.

Once they got to jail, Hurd found herself facing additional charges, when she allegedly confessed to having a bag of cocaine hidden in a body cavity. She was additionally charged with cocaine trafficking, promoting contraband and tampering with physical evidence.

Both continue to be held in the Big Sandy Regional Detention Center, in Paintsville.
