Suspect arrested following shooting in Wise

WISE, Va. — A Russell County, Va., man has been arrested in connection with a shooting Tuesday in Wise.

The Wise County Sheriff’s Office and University of Virginia’s College at Wise Campus Police responded to the shooting on Sykes Boulevard.

Police say the victim was shot in the back while sitting in a pickup truck. The shooter fled the scene in a Nissan Rogue after firing several shots into the truck. The victim was taken to the hospital for treatment.

Sheriff’s deputies later identified Ronnie Wayne Phillips Jr., 42, of Castlewood, as their suspect and arrested him. Police say he and the victim knew each other prior to the incident.

Phillips is charged with aggravated malicious wounding, shooting at an occupied vehicle and use of a firearm in commission of a felony. He is being held in the Southwest Virginia Regional Jail at Duffield.
