Pike County, Ky: Kentucky Attorney General Andy Beshear brought his fight against the state’s new pension law to Pike County this afternoon. Beshear made a stop at Pike County Central High School to speak with educators and others about the problems he sees with the new law, as well as what he is doing to correct them. He told those in attendance that fixing the problems with the new law is the right thing to do for Kentucky’s public employees.
“Well this new pension law is both immoral and illegal. It’s immoral because decades ago, the general assembly made a promise. They made a promise that if you give decades of your life teaching our children and protecting our families as a police officer or firefighter, serving the neglected as a social worker, and while we wouldn’t pay you enough we would promise you a solid retirement. Well the legislature has broken that promise, and that’s immoral. It is also illegal, because that promise was turned into a contract; it was passed into law. When it was passed into law, they made it inviolable, meaning it could never be broken.”
Earlier this month, Beshear joined the Kentucky Education Association and Fraternal Order of Police in suing Governor Matt Bevin and the legislature on the grounds that the recent overhaul of the state pension system is unconstitutional.
