Area communities establish warming centers ahead of Arctic freeze

With temperatures expected to plummet into the single digits early Friday morning and subzero wind chills expected as a result, communities around Eastern Kentucky are setting up warming centers for people who need a temporary source of heat.

PIKE COUNTY

Centers are being established at the Belfry, Kimper and Shelby Valley senior citizens centers, as well as the Phelps Fire Department station 1. Those needing to use the centers are asked to call first at the following numbers.

If there is no answer, you can also call (606) 422-7989.

The city of Pikeville will also set up a warming center if needed. It will be located in the lobby of Myers Towers.

FLOYD COUNTY

centers are being set up at the Left Beaver Fire & Rescue station 2 in McDowell, Wheelwright Baptist Church, Maytown Fire Department and the Floyd County Community Center. Those needing to use one are asked to call (606) 594-9678 or (606) 205-1767 first. If you live in or within 4 miles of Prestonsburg and need transportion, you can call (606) 886-1010.

MARTIN COUNTY

Martin County will have warming centers available at the Martin County Senior Citizens Center, Pigeon Roost Community Center, and the Tomahawk, Turkey and Warfield fire departments. Those needing to use one must first call (606) 298-3211.


 


LETCHER COUNTY

Letcher County will have warming centers at the Recreational Center in Whitesburg, as well as the Sandlick and Gordon fire departments. Those needing to use one of the centers after 9 p.m. are asked to call the following numbers.

JOHNSON COUNTY

Johnson County is setting up a warming center at 342 Second Street, in the former sheriff’s office. The county is also asking for volunteers to help operate the center. For information or to volunteer, call Paintsville/Johnson County Emergency management at (606) 789-2550 or (606) 789-4221.

MAGOFFIN COUNTY

The Lloyd M Hall Community Center will be available as a warming center for anyone without power and/or heat. If possible, call the dispatch center non-emergency line at (606) 349-4403 to let them know you’re coming.

LOGAN COUNTY, W.Va.

Warming centers are being placed on standby at the following locations:

  • Logan Resource Center (old 84 Lumber) on Peach Creek
  • Tracy Vickers Community Center
  • Cora Fire Department

Anyone needing assistance with transportation to those centers is asked to call the Logan Emergency Operations Center at (304) 752-7662.

MINGO COUNTY, W.Va.

A warming station has been established on the second floor of the Williamson Fire Department, located at 145 East 4th Ave. Call (304) 235-5273 with any questions.
