Officials: Both workers in building collapse confirmed dead

UPDATE, 11:15 p.m. – Kentucky Emergency Management has announced that the body of Billy “Bo” Daniels has been recovered from the rubble.

PILGRIM, Ky. — In a Friday afternoon press conference, Martin County Judge-Executive Dr. Lon Lafferty confirmed that both men who were trapped in a building collapse Tuesday evening are dead.

The two men, identified as Billy “Bo” Daniels and Alvin Nees, were working in the building, preparing it for a scheduled demolition, when it collapsed around 6:30 p.m. Tuesday.

Officials had previously confirmed that Daniels had died, but still held out hope that Nees would be found alive and had been treating the operation as a rescue mission.

“This is not the outcome that we had hoped for, that we had prayed for, but we knew going in that this was a very grim and difficult situation,” Lafferty said.

Nees’ body has been recovered from the debris and is now in custody of the Martin County coroner. Daniels’ body has not yet been recovered, but officials said they expect that to happen sometime tonight.

Both bodies will ultimately be turned over to the State Medical Examiner’s Office for autopsy.
