Thousands without power as temperatures plummet

Hundreds of customers in Eastern Kentucky and neighboring areas in Virginia and West Virginia are without power after a winter system brought dangerously frigid temperatures to the region.

With the thermometer resting in the low single digits, Kentucky Power reported 1,244 outages as of 1 p.m. Friday. That was down from more than 2,000 earlier in the day.

Of those, the largest number were reported in the Perry County area, with nearly 700 outages reported. Fewer than 300 were reported in Pike County, down from more than double that earlier in the day.

Meanwhile, Big Sandy RECC reported 353 outages, with more than 200 of those centered on Route 201 in Johnson County.

Appalachian Power was reporting more than 49,000 outages in Virginia and West Virginia, including 246 in Mingo County, W.Va., 180 in Logan County, W.Va., and 672 in and around Wise County, Va.

The outages come as temperatures hovered near the zero mark, making home heating vital. Communities across the region have established warming centers for those without heat.
