FRANKFORT, Ky. — A bill that supporters say protects the religious freedom of public school teachers, faculty and staff has been cleared by the House Education Committee in the Kentucky legislature.

Rep. Chris Fugate, of Perry County, says he was inspired to sponsor House Bill 547 following the case of a Washington football coach who was fired for leading a group prayer on the field following a game.

Fugate’s bill would allow any school district employee to lead prayer or religious study during breaks, during lunch, or before or after school. It would also allow them to talk about their faith with other employees and permit the use of religious clothing or decor.

“House Bill 547 is a bill that protects the faculty and staff’s religious freedom in public schools,” Fugate said. “It ensures the faculty that they have a right to express their faith. They may sponsor religious activities, student activities. They are protected from coercion and threats by government officials.”

The bill also specifically states that no one would be required to participate in any religious activity.

The bill cleared the committee and now goes to the full House for consideration.
