‘Bogus Beggar’ arrested in Paintsville

Gary Thompson

PAINTSVILLE, Ky. — Gary Thompson, a man popularly known as the “Bogus Beggar” for allegedly pretending to be disabled while panhandling in the Louisville area, was arrested in Paintsville.

Thompson, 40, of Louisville, once admitted to a reporter that he makes $100,000 a year asking for spare change.

There is no access to Thompson’s case file until papers are filed in the Johnson County Courthouse Monday. However, the Big Sandy Regional Detention Center where he is being held lists him as having been arrested by Paintsville Police early Saturday evening on charges of soliciting unlawful compensation, trespassing, disorderly conduct and resisting arrest — all misdemeanors.
