BELFRY, Ky. — A stop to satisfy his thirst led a state trooper to arrest two people for drug trafficking.

The trooper was patrolling in Belfry on Wednesday, when he stopped at a gas station to get something to drink. When he got out of his car, he noticed a strong odor of marijuana coming from the car next to him.

The officer spoke to the two people around the car, identified as Bucky Smith, 46, and Tina Runyon, 48, both of Phelps, and asked if they had any marijuana in the car. They reportedly admitted that there was a small amount under a seat.

The trooper found a bag containing a small amount of marijuana, but he continued searching and found a bag containing a much larger amount of marijuana, along with two bags of meth.

Smith and Runyon were arrested and charged with trafficking in more than 8 ounces of marijuana, meth trafficking and other drug-related charges. They are currently being held in the Pike County Detention Center.
