PRESTONSBURG, Ky. — The search for a missing Prestonsburg woman has come to a tragic end, two years after her disappearance.

Mountain Top News has confirmed with Floyd County Coroner Greg Nelson that the remains of Kandi Green Gonzalez have been positively identified.

Nelson said loggers discovered a bone on the Left Fork of Abbott, across a mountain from the location where Gonzalez was last seen alive on Abbott Creek on June 1, 2021. A search of the area turned up more remains.

According to Kentucky State Police, the remains were discovered back on April 27.

DNA and other tests were performed on the remains and they have now been confirmed to belong to Gonzalez.

Nelson said the condition of the remains is consistent with her death having occurred shortly after her disappearance.

The age and condition of the remains also means that attempts to establish a cause of death have been inconclusive.

Members of Gonzalez’s family began posting on social media about the confirmation Wednesday afternoon. They have since requested privacy during their time of mourning.

KSP is asking anyone with information about the case to contact them at (606) 433-7711.
