PIKEVILLE, Ky. — A Pikeville man is in jail after police say he ran from authorities in West Virginia, then hit a cyclist as he tried to get home.

It all began just after 10 p.m. Friday in Logan, when Nicholas Wright, 62, allegedly became involved in a police pursuit with Logan Police, the Mingo County Sheriff’s Office and West Virginia State Police. The West Virginia officers pursued him as far the Meta exit on Route 119, then notified Pikeville Police of his tag number.

Pikeville officers were already familiar with Wright and were waiting on him, when they say he entered the Myers Tower parking lot at a high rate of speed, then drove recklessly to the parking area for Ridge Cliff Apartments, where he lives. Officers made contact with Wright, who reportedly admitted to running from police in West Virginia.

A short time later, the officers learned of a hit-and-run involving a car colliding with a cyclist on Hambley Boulevard. The cyclist was able to give police a description of the car, which matched Wright’s vehicle, and they noticed damage to his car consistent with hitting a bicycle.

Wright allegedly admitted to police that he had hit a bicycle, but he left because he had to get home. He now faces felony charges of second-degree assault and leaving the scene of an accident.
