LICK CREEK, Ky. — One thing that those not from Eastern Kentucky may not understand is the close knit community that bonds us all together. Sometimes, we have people in those communities that can light up any room, anytime they enter it.

For East Ridge High School, that was Zena Newsome. Zena tragically passed away during the summer before her senior year in May of 2024. It was apparent the light she shined on her community, her school and on the Warrior volleyball team.

Coach Brooke Fraley and her lady Warriors honored Zena on Tuesday night with the Zena Newsome Memorial Game. The Lady Warriors faced off against Council, Va., in freshman, JV and Vvarsity action.

Sometimes, we see that sometimes sports are so much bigger than the match point or final buzzer, and it was on Tuesday night. The Warriors won all tthree matches against Council, in a night that was all about honoring a young lady whose memory will live on for a very long time on Lick Creek.

A huge congratulations to the Lady Warriors on a big win on a night that honored one of their own and all of us here at Mountain Top Sports join East Ridge High School in ensuring Zena’s legacy will never be forgotten.
