Floyd judge-exec requests special prosecutor in Amber Spradlin case

PRESTONSBURG, Ky. — Floyd County Judge-Executive Robbie Williams is asking Attorney General Daniel Cameron to appoint a special prosecutor in the case involving the murder of Amber Spradlin.

Spradlin’s body was discovered at the Arkansas Creek home of prominent Prestonsburg dentist Dr. Michael McKinney. She had been stabbed 11 times.

In his letter to Cameron’s office, Williams says McKinney’s connections to local officials and the lack of an arrest nearly three months later have fueled public skepticism in the investigation.

“Because of lingering concerns conveyed by Amber Spradlin’s family members and many citizens in the community, I am requesting the appointment of a special prosecutor to assume jurisdiction over the criminal prosecution of those responsible for Amber Spradlin’s murder,” Williams said in a statement released to the media. “My office submitted a formal, written request this morning to the Office of the Attorney General, Division of Special Prosecution.”

Williams says the special circumstances of the case require independent oversight of the prosecution.

“There is too much at stake for Amber’s family, and our community,” Williams said. “Everyone must have complete confidence that those involved will be prosecuted, convicted and sentenced to the maximum penalties allowed by law. I believe the timely appointment of a special prosecutor to assume jurisdiction over this case will provide needed reassurance about this investigation.”
