GARRETT, Ky. — A Floyd County man faces numerous felony charges, after being accused of ramming a police car and dousing officers with bear spray.
A sheriff’s deputy responded to a report Tuesday evening of a suspicious vehicle at the mouth of Stone Coal, in Garrett, and went to check it out. When he arrived, he found Shawn Francis, 60, of Garrett, sitting in a Lexus that was parked facing traffic. The deputy pulled in behind the car and turned on his police lights, when Francis allegedly put his car in reverse and rammed the police cruiser, before taking off.
He was later stopped outside of his home on Water Street, at which time he got out of his car with one hand behind his back. After being told to show his hands several times, Francis then pulled his hand out, reportedly showing that he was holding a large bottle of bear spray, and the police report says he then proceeded to spray two deputies and a constable with it several times.
Deputies then used pepper spray and a taser to bring him under control, causing him to fall and strike the back of his head against the door jamb. That resulted in a gash that required 12 staples to close.
Francis now faces three counts of assaulting an officer, wanton endangerment, fleeing police and other charges.
