Sheriff’s deputies were called to a report of an assault in progress at a home on Kidd Fork Road at Banner. While en route to the home, dispatchers reported hearing someone on the call saying, “You are going to die, close your eyes,” and another person saying, “He’s got a knife.”

When officers arrived, they found Benjamin Shepherd, 34, and his mother on the porch. The woman reportedly said, “Thank God, he is trying to kill me,” as deputies approached the house.

The woman told police that Shepherd began assaulting her while holding a butcher knife in his hand. She said he then began strangling her, at which time she began kicking him with her knee, causing both of them to fall through a bathroom door. It was at that point she was able to break free and escape through an open window.

The police report notes the woman had bruises and a large abrasion around her neck.

Shepherd would not give a statement to police when he was arrested.

He has been charged with first-degree wanton endangerment, first-degree strangulation, fourth-degree assault and second-degree criminal mischief.
