McDOWELL, Ky. — Two Floyd County man were arrested after leading police on a chase on a snow-covered road, which ended with the discovery of stolen mine equipment in their truck.
A state trooper patrolling in McDowell ran a plate on a truck and discovered the driver had his license suspended for a fourth-offense DUI violation, so he attempted to pull it over. The truck continued onto Spewing Camp Branch without stopping, leading to a chase. The pursuit continued for about 2.5 miles before the truck was unable to make it up an icy hill.
Driving the truck was Malen Mitchell, 50, of Beaver, who had the suspended license, while Jason Stumbo, 47, of Hi Hat, was in the passenger seat.
The officer spotted a variety of mining equipment in the bed of the truck, including high-voltage electrical breakers, distribution boxes, electric motors, a water pump and hydraulic hoses. The men reportedly told the officer they had salvaged it from an abandoned mine in Martin County, so they didn’t think it was stealing.
The officer determined that the equipment came from the old Excel Mining tipple that is now owned by Lexington Coal.
Both men were arrested for receiving stolen property and other charges.
