PRESTONSBURG, Ky. — The preliminary hearing for a man accused of murdering three police officers last month in Floyd County was canceled Monday, after a grand jury issued an indictment beforehand.
Lance Storz, 49, of Allen, was scheduled to appear in court for the hearing at 1:30. Instead, the judge announced that the hearing was no longer necessary, since the grand jury had already issued a 20-count indictment.
Storz is accused of shooting deputies as they approached his home to take him into custody in connection with a domestic violence case. Under the new indictment, he is now charged with three counts of murder of a police officer, six counts of attempted murder of a police officer, seven counts of wanton endangerment, two counts of assault of a police officer, one count of assault of a service animal, and one count of fourth-degree assault.
Floyd County Commonwealth’s Attorney Brent Turner said the charges against Storz meet the criteria for the death penalty if he is convicted, and his office is currently reviewing the case to determine whether to pursue it.
Storz will be arraigned on the indictment at 10:30 Tuesday morning.
